Children's Book Publishing

How do you publish a children's book, from manuscript to illustrator?

Children's book publishing is a team sport: words, pictures, page turns and age-appropriate language have to work as one object. At Bradbury Publishers, we review your manuscript for its age band (board book, picture book, early reader, chapter book or middle grade), match it with an illustrator whose style fits the story, plan every spread, check read-aloud rhythm, and deliver print-ready files with the exact trim sizes and color specs Amazon KDP and IngramSpark require.

A 32-page picture book has roughly 14 opportunities for a page turn — and the best ones use every single one. Our children's team plans spreads the way filmmakers plan shots: what the child sees before the words land, what the pictures know that the narrator doesn't, and where the giggle or gasp belongs.

Illustration is where most self-published children's books succeed or fail. We don't hand you a directory and vanish — we match your story with illustrators (several US-based), manage briefs, revisions and final files, and make sure character consistency holds from cover to final page. The result: a book teachers reach for, grandparents gift, and kids demand again.

Children's book questions, answered

How much does it cost to publish a children's book in the US?

A 32-page picture book with professional illustration typically runs $3,500–$9,000 depending on the illustrator's style and number of spreads. Middle-grade novels (mostly text) run closer to $2,000–$5,000 with editing, cover and typesetting. You get an itemized quote — illustration is its own line, so you can choose the tier that fits.

Do I need an illustrator before I come to you?

No — most clients don't have one. We shortlist illustrators whose style fits your story, show you sample spreads, and manage the whole engagement. If you already have artwork, we'll review it for print-readiness and character consistency.

What age band should my book be?

It depends on vocabulary, sentence length, theme and length: board books (0–3) use a handful of words, picture books (4–8) run 300–800 words, chapter books (6–9) and middle grade (8–12) are longer with fewer or no illustrations. We'll place your manuscript honestly — and tell you if a revision unlocks a bigger audience.

Can you publish rhyming picture books?

Yes, with a caveat we'll say to your face: rhyme must be perfect or not at all. Our read-aloud edit fixes meter and stress patterns line by line — or, if the story is stronger in prose, we'll show you why and let you decide.

How long does a picture book take?

Typically 4–6 months: 2–3 weeks for age-band editing and storyboard, 8–14 weeks for illustration with your feedback at every stage, then 2–3 weeks for typesetting, proofing and distribution. Rush timelines are possible — ask for a dated schedule with your quote.

Will schools and libraries be able to order it?

Yes — we publish an Ingram edition with library-grade specs (hardcover, reinforced options, CIP-style data) that makes your title orderable by school librarians and media specialists across the US.

The story you tell at bedtime deserves real illustrations and a real place on the shelf. Send us your manuscript — we'll match illustrators and quote every step within one business day.
